My 13 year old self needed this book years ago. Fabulous!

The media could not be loaded.

As a teenager I suffered panic attacks from the age of 13. I struggled with my mental health daily but getting help was practically impossible until I turned 18 and could access adult mental health services where I was diagnosed with clinical depression, generalised anxiety disorder, social anxiety and OCD.Now as the mother of a 9 year old ASD/ADHD daughter who is already anxious, I’m well aware that her mental health is something that we need to be aware of and work on to avoid history repeating itself. This is why I purchased this book.I would say the book is aimed at kids aged 10-16 roughly. But also great to read as a parent of a child in that age range to help gain a better understanding of children’s mental health. It’s well written and deals with what is quite a serious subject in way that makes it seem less daunting to a young audience and it’s backed by some wonderful illustrations. It covers various subjects, including depression, exam based stress, anxiety, relationships, bereavement, scoial media and how it distorts our view of reality, and even touches on self harm and getting help with that. Some may think self harm to be a controversial topic for this age range, but as scary as it seems, since I personally know a couple of young people who actually do this I believe it is a subject that does need to addressed. This book describes how to rationalise your irrational anxious thoughts, to be comfortable with yourself and see the positives in what make you unique because ‘You are worthy, You are good enough’ How making a mistake does not make you a failure, but learning from them builds resilience and strength of character as stated on page 174 ‘Don’t be afraid to start over again. This time you’re not starting from scratch. You’re starting from experience’.The book remains positive throughout and you get the feeling that the author has personal lived experience, and understands well the struggles that the reader may be going through. One big message that runs throughout the book is the importance of opening up about how you are feeling when you start to feel overwhelmed (even before then if you can) How finding someone you can share these feelings with will help you see light at the end of the tunnel and that there is no shame in asking for help. There is also a handy self help section at the back of the book which lists websites you can turn to for help and resources.Children’s mental health is such an important subject and sadly so often overlooked, that I feel this book is definitely needed and that all children would do well to read this book. Especially those just starting their journey into secondary school, puberty and all the changes that come with it at a time when they’re at their most vulnerable. I wish this kind of positive resource had been around when I was that age.

    Amazing Book

Well what can I say, this book has really helped my niece when starting secondary school, her reviews were fantastic that I recommended it to my friend whose child was struggling in school and suffering from OCD at age 10, they’ve been reading it together each night and it’s made such a positive impact to her sleep routine in such a few short days. Thanks for such an incredible book to help young children, highly recommend!

Important tool to add to your tookbox

As a mother, grandmother and youth worker I know how important it is for young people to have a point of reference and to feel that they are not alone with their thoughts and worries. With the pressures of school, social media, friendships, home life, identity etc this is an ideal book to help readers understand and make sense of things in an easy and rational way. A must have for any young person, family member or those working with young people. Thank you Dr Alex – keep up your fabulous work!

    A great read!

Loved the page layouts, as they made the content much easier to read and the many sketches and cartoons helped too! There is nothing worse than a full page of text in size 11 font! Pitched well for the target audience too, with some pragmatic tips and advice.

The illustrations break up the book nicely as well. It’s full of practical advice that I think people of all ages could use. I am definitely holding on for it when my niece and nephew are old enough.

    Such a wonderful book

What a fantastic book I can not recommend this enough. I read the first page and we’ll it brought a tear to my eye as it hit me more so how you can see the book through a person going through the same. My son started to read this book and when he got to the third page the first time ever he opened up with his worries where he always keeps them in he suffered with really bad anxiety and separation anxiety. I think this book is wonderful and I think all children in schools should be given one as in the world right as children are suffering with there mental health and in schools there isn’t the support there should be. This can help child understand they aren’t the only ones and they aren’t alone and helps with over coming things and a better way of looking at things. Thank you Alex for this wonderful book ❤️

A “must have” for any troubled young minds.

I bought this for my 9 year old boy who’s struggling with life at the moment. He can’t sleep at night as he can’t get out of his own head for hours. We are reading a chapter a night together and it’s helping him open up and talk, and the best thing is he feels like someone understands and gets him. We are excited to keep reading and talking through this sad phase in his life.

    Every child needs this book.

I’ve followed Dr Alex and his work with mental health from the beginning. He has such a good manner in explaining things. This book didn’t disappoint. I have a young friend who has faced many battles and I felt helpless in knowing what to say in some cases. So I decided to buy this in the hope it will help. I’ve read it myself before I give it to her and I think it’s brilliant. I think schools should give every child this book. It’s set out in a methodical way and the illustration add a little humour to tough subjects. Great work Dr Alex!
