    A good read but…..

This was a good read. It explored everything the author experienced from different angles and different perspectives which I appreciated. Not to minimize the trials and tribulations the author experienced but I honestly thought there was going to be more to her story. Overall it was a good book though.

  4. Kathryn E. Korb

    Perseverance!

Daniella could have easily become a statistic, after suffering constant abandonment by a mom whose own tragic life left Daniella feeling unloved and unwanted. Thanks to the love and help from others, she never have up ! Very inspiring, but felt her writing style lacked the emotion and depth that would enable readers to really empathize and relate to such a painful upbringing that impacted her life.

    One of the best reads….

The tenacity this woman and her mother had for survival was more than anything I can comprehend. The heartbreaking choices Daniella’s mother made to take care of her child said much about her character.. This is a story I will never forget!

    Perspective is everything

I don’t typically write reviews, but the story touched me. It’s not technically written well, but then again my book I wrote wasn’t either. But I can relate to the story, the person, the life and internal feelings. I applaud the courage to write a life story and putting yourself out there. Be proud.. be brave..

    Worth a read

I’ve read this over the course of a few days. What an interesting story which shows the hardship of what life was like for a teenage mum in the 50’s. I don’t want to spoiler, but it made me happy to know that sometimes revenge is a dish best served cold.

    Behind Closed Doors

This was an emotional roller coaster of a read. I very easily felt sympathy for the child as well as the mother who dragged her poor daughter though the knot holes of her messed up life.

    Genuine and touching

Well written and inspiring to everyone whose going through pain from all angles, pain of not having resources and fighting through it all. Thank you for sharing the details and the truth about hardest times many people would never dare to share. This is therapeutic. Everyone of us have problems but many would never share their hardship to inspire others. Thank you DD and God bless

    An Easy Read

For once, this wasn’t a story of abuse or neglect of a child. It was about a young parent’s struggle to do what was right by her daughter after being abandoned by her father & everyone she loved. Beautifully written.

  21. S. Giliotti

    Honest real life stuff

This was a nicely paced story about human suffering on many different levels. It had a very raw and personal feel as though the author was sitting down next to you telling her story with all its ups and downs. The author never dwelled too long on any particular event, which kept a healthy pulse throughout. While the writing style was simplistic, I see this as a strength because it allowed the reader to delve into to the rawness and emotion without being tangled around clever and circuitous metaphors that would only subtract from the reality of the author’s struggles. It’s nice to see that a child so twisted and turned was able to learn, grow and trust in love after all. Bravo….

  22. M. Lemmons

    Breathtaking truthfully written

    A really tough life

I liked this book for two reasons, the first the way the story was told by two different people (although it can also lead to some confusion and the reader has to refocus on who is narrating the story at that particular point) and the second is the total sincere way the facts are presented. “Don’t rely on others to make you happy” was the sentence that summed the whole thing up. Yes, quite a good read. Would not normally be my type of book but it came my way and I decided it deserved to be read.

  26. Deborah Roberts

    read this in one day

Couldn’t put it down! Such an open honest story of a difficult childhood and the ups and downs of creating a life for hersel

  27. kykid

    Decent read

It was a quick read but confusing at times at who was telling the story, the aunt or Daniella. But for the most part, it kept me engaged. Though the author writes that she made bad decisions, I don’t see how she made many other than her relationships with people versus say turning to drugs or a life of crime.

  28. johnZ

    I’m glad I did

First, this is not the type of book I would normally read. I heard about it through an author’s forum and I took a peek. I read the Look Inside and the book’s description, then I decided to buy the book. I’m glad I did. As other reviewers have said, I couldn’t put it down once I started to read it. It’s an easy read and the writing is very good. Some people may think that this is a sad story, but for many people who weren’t raised in the Ozzie and Harriet household, they will be able to relate to this author’s story. Sure, there are many sad moments, but the real point of this story is you can get past those moments in your life. Those moments don’t define you, they are simply part of your life. She said it best at the end of her book, “Don’t rely on others to make you happy.”

    Good book, bad writing

I read this book in one sitting which was easy to do. It’s pretty short. I also had to figure out that it was Toni writing about Josi to Daniella, then by Daniella, lol. The sentences are so short it reads at a staccato pace. I would have given it five stars if not for that. The author was very open about her life and that I appreciated. She lived a rough one with a lot of heartache, that’s for sure.

  30. Rhonda Witchen

No matter where you come from you have the power to choose!

Daniella’s beginnings in life where unstable with many heartbreaking disappointments. Her Mother’s cold personality, being left with complete strangers with no idea why or when Mom would be back. I could go on it was deeply emotional to read this child’s experience in life. However she rose up when she becomes aware regardless of circumstance she learned to choose to respond. When she begins it is how her Moms choices affected her and how angry she was with her. When the other side of Mom’s story is revealed she realizes how her Mothers life was shaped by a bad choice. That everything her Mom did was to protect and love her in her own wayDaniella I could not put your book down read straight thru.

    Heartbreaking Reminder

A book that gives you a heartbreaking reminder on the cruelty of life and how our story begins with our parents. It helps out the “bad parent” in a different light, from anger to understanding. It’s a must read for those who still hold onto resentment and anger, especially towards one’s parents.

  32. Debra Pluchak

    Daniella

This book was a great story of someone tough life but she made it through it. I was bored in the middle but kept reading and it ended up realizing how much of an encouragement it was for me to keep going with my life and not give up.

    Shocking Reality

Reading this book is like sitting next to someone as they reminisce. It’s a style that I’m not sure I could pull off, but it definitely works in this context. My heart broke over and over again as I learned more of Josie’s life story.Don’t read this without a box of tissues close at hand.WARNING – There is some strong language!

    Good story but…

I love a real life story but this felt rushed. I needed more detail. This woman/ girl went through so much this story could have gone off the charts If we just got a little more emotion description and if it was longer. It was a good read and I love that she felt brave enough to tell her story. But I read it in less than 24hrs….

    Quick Read, Keeps your Attention

This is a memoir written by the daughter of a teenage girl, Josie, who became pregnant, was kicked out by her father, forced into marrying the father of her child, and her struggle to provide for Daniella without education or money. The story is told in two parts. One by an aunt or friend of her mother, wasn’t clear unless I missed something, and then the second part is told by Daniella. Josie does not have it easy for many years. Forced into hiding when her husband, whom she divorced while he was in prison, gets out and searches for her. He beats her nearly to her death when he finally finds her. Josie’s life takes an unexpected turn when she meets a girl named Gina. She and Gina spent many years together and tried to raise Daniella the best they could with little income. Sadly, they dropped Daniella off with a couple who seemed to be foster parents. Josie was in and out of Daniella’s life a number of times when she would take Daniella back and then later drop her off with someone different. Daniella had a number of loving foster parents who loved and nurtured her. It wasn’t until Daniella was a grown adult that she found out the truth about her mother’s life and life choices. I finished this in just a few hours. It’s a quick read. While the writing is somewhat childish, I rather thought it added to Daniella’s story since she was just a small child going through so much.

She is of mixed heritage but appears that her grandparents were good people even though her mother’s parents kicked her mother

Wow. Daniella is an inspiration. It is hard to believe that someone could go through everything that she has and still triumph over her upbringing. She was abandoned over and over by her mother who got pregnant at sixteen by a juvenile delinquent teenager. She is of mixed heritage but appears that her grandparents were good people even though her mother’s parents kicked her mother, Josie, out when she got pregnant. At least Daniella had a personality and spirit where two different families that she was dumped on loved her and wanted to adopt her. I believe with the loving spiritual personality that she has it has helped her to overcome the hell that she went through as a child. There were people in her life, like the two foster families that wanted her to Gina, her mother’s friend and the mafia guys, Big Al and cohorts that treated her well and loved her. Her father Nickie was a beast from hell that made her life even worse when she met him as a young adult. If Daniella could triumph over her “raising” no one should have an excuse to blame their childhood on why they ended up becoming bad people. Maybe if her mother’s parents wouldn’t have disowned her, things would have been better for Josie, Daniella’s mother. Maybe it wouldn’t have made a difference. Whatever happened Josie made some really bad choices but Daniella has a forgiving heart and was able to at least understand why her mother did the things she did.It was a hard book to put down, and there were parts where I wanted to say, “No Daniella, don’t do that, ” because I was pretty sure it would end up badly and I was right. It was sad though because someone who was trying to do right trusted their father who was a horrible person.I would like to add though that she had some really good influences in her life, with friends that helped and families that were genuinely good caring people. It is nice to know there are families out there that take in kids and want the best for them. I hope that those people read this book and see how much Daniella loved and appreciated them, and how they influenced her to have the self-esteem that helped her to overcome her horrible lineage.

This author put the story of her life so beautifully on paper. I read it in a day, I couldn’t put it down.
