Perfect for parents of their first pre-teen!

This book describes what you can expect as your pre teen evolves into an adolescent, provides suggestions on how you can manage difficult situations or avert them and give parents a sense of support and direction when navigating these new waters.

Exactly what I needed to read !

I haven’t finished reading this yet but so far it’s been just what I needed to help understand my 10 and 8 year old that bit better ! Lots of their behaviours make more sense now and the information on brain development is fab. I’ve recommended to everyone I speak to !

    Good relatable advice

Not everything in the book related to my tween but I found it fascinating to learn about changes and be able understand what my child may be going through

A brilliant guide to the tween years!

My children are not yet in the tween years but fast approaching and I wanted to be prepared. I have always found the author Sarah Ockwell Smith to be a good guide through the baby and toddler years, so this book appeared just at the right time for us. I also work with children of all ages and find this age are sometimes tricky. You know where you are more with younger children and teenagers, tweens can be either, or both at the same time.Between gives a thorough overview into what is happening in the tween body and brain to set the scene. It encourages you to reflect on your own tween years and what you yourself needed at that time. There is a lot of emphasis on having realistic expectations for children. Reading this book made me remember throwing a strop about my Mum not buying me a puppet in a gift shop aged about 9 years old and linking that the the fact I would expect better behavior from my own daughter at 9. I will hold that thought in my head, that I turned out ok despite having these moments! There are a wide and comprehensive range of topics covered like friendships, technology, puberty. My eldest child is 6years old and I already found the topics on money, talking about sex and relationships and body image were relevant at her age. One example is that talking about sex and relationships needs to happen as mini conversations when they naturally occur rather than one big chat – those sorts of questions start early! I really liked the idea of having a special box with everything they need for girls who will be starting their periods at some point in the future such a nice idea. It is totally different approach to the way I was brought up and refreshing.Teaching kids about money and how the financial world works is also I think can start earlier than the tween years and I will be implementing pocket money very soon.Lastly, what really struck a cord is how we as parents are role models. Our kids are watching us, be it about our own body image, how we handle conflict, our relationships. I reflected on how much I had nagged my daughter about her messy room recently as I looked around my messy house (thank you lockdown and home schooling) and offered to help her get her room sorted. We did it together no problems.I will schedule in to read it again next year when we are another step close to the tween years.

Every parent should read this book!!!!

Amazing book. We sometimes forgetting how it is to be a teen. This book reminds me of my childhood and open my eyes to my children. I still making mistakes, but at least I notice them and try to fix them. I have a much better connection with my child after reading this book. Still coming back sometimes to read specific chapters. I highly recommend this book to parents.

Very useful resource, stick with it!

I love all Sarah Ockwell Smith’s work, so I am not surprised I love it. At first I found it a little overwhelming/technical but it is very well written and understand me if you have the time to invest in it. The rest of it is her usual practical, empathetic advice for parents and I think it’s invaluable. Sarah lives in the real world but aspires for it to be better – don’t we all. Look forward to more from Sarah x

A liberal guide for raising tweens

Good parenting tips and advice. The author does push her personal opinions and politics quite a lot in some sections.

Thumbs up from this mum of tweens!

With 2 tweens in my family, this was a must-buy!It’s already proved so useful, particularly reading about brain development and the importance of setting realistic expectations based on what tweens are capable of doing. And the idea of containment when it comes to helping tweets handle big feelings.A good mix of theory and practical advice. I’ll check out her books for our toddler now!

    Informative and Practical

I noticed a real change in my daughter’s mood when she hit 8 years old but I had not anticipated hormones having an impact quite so young so I felt very unprepared. In my quest to understand and help my daughter with her fluctuating emotions and increasing anxiety I discovered Sarah Ockwell-Smith’s book and it has proven to be a great resource. Understanding the biology of what is going on, particularly the brain development has been really informative and I’ve come away from this book with a lot of practical tips and strategies for building tween self esteem, managing anxiety, promoting body positivity, etc as well some great ideas about screen rules, fostering financial literacy, promoting independence, etc that I had on the list to sit down and think about “one day” but it would appear that day has in fact come and I’m now getting ready to issue pocket money and dish out first period kits. I’ve already recommended this to all of my friends who have or will soon have tweens – I highly recommend it.

    Reassuring as always!

I’ve read most of Sarah Ockwell-Smith’s books and always find them so useful. My daughter’s 7 and I wanted to be prepared for what’s coming next – the information and myth-busting is really reassuring, with great tips on helping your child through this tricky stage. Will definitely be rereading before her 8th birthday!

Wonderful book – would highly recommend.

I found this book incredibly helpful and insightful and think it’s important reading for all parents. I also enjoyed it more than I was expecting (I had anticipated a parenting book being useful but dull and this is not the case at all)! I have bookmarked some parts to go back to, tips that I’d like to try etc. I love Sarah’s empathetic and gentle approach.

    Interesting read and confidence-inspiring

Having read some of the author’s other books, I was really looking forward to this one and it has lived up to expectations. We are just starting to see some ‘tween behaviours’ and after reading the book I am reassured that everything is normal. I also feel well prepared in how to handle what might come and have gained an appreciation of how tweens are developing. I would thoroughly recommend the book to inspire confidence and calmness in parents of children in this age range.

Helpful, practical guidance for parents of tweens

As a mom of two tweens, I find Ockwell-Smith’s book both fascinating and helpful, all information and guidance implementable and relevant. The author has organized the chapters efficiently, so that we first review brain development and then move into the impact thereof. I appreciate that Ockwell-Smith provides info in a manner easily understandable by the layman, and that her tone is informative rather than pedantic. Some information about schooling and future aspirations is specific to UK readers, but the dots are easy-enough to apply to my home country (USA). Overall, this is an easy, interesting read and has made an immediate impact on how my husband and I make parenting choices.Note: this book is for PARENTS; Amazon (USA) has erroneously slated this book as having a reading age of 8-13 years old.

You have to buy this book!

I’ve been a huge fan of Sarah Ockwell-Smith since discovering The Gentle Sleep Book. I’ve since read other books written by her and follow her on social media. Her posts and her books stem not only from her extensive knowledge about brain growth and development but also from her experience as a mother of four children. Her books are a wonderful read full of insight, practical tips and above all, understanding. She doesn’t wag the finger and make you feel like the worst parent in the world. What she has to say is empowering and has given me a much better insight into my tweens. As an educator I also want all educators to read this book and internalise what Sarah has to say. There is so much we can learn about being empathetic and supporting of our Tweens. I’ve been recommending this book wherever I can!Thank you so much to Sarah for another brilliant book! I can’t wait for the next one.
