    A comforting read

I have learnt a lot from reading this. Mostly to take it easy on myself. When I think I’m not parenting well I’m actually doing better than I think. I have a few of this authors books and they are always sensible, practical and easy to read.

    A must read

This is a book I’ve been looking for without even realising it. So refreshing to acknowledge that we can’t always perfectly parent. And so helpful to better understand and process our own childhoods and how they impact how we then parent. A must read for anyone trying to Gentle Parent

I’ve been following SOS for a few years and have read most of her books. They’re so insightful and backed with evidence and stats, it’s not just opinion based but also proven. This book has m loads of tools and tips on creating a calmer home life, I can’t recommend it enough.

    Absolutely brilliant!

I loved this book from start to finish, I had the audible version which I think really helps to get the point across better. It’s really been quite life changing, some of the realisations that I’ve made whilst listening to this. It’s not a self help book, it’s not really a parenting book, it’s more of a book to help you see that you are good enough and small steps you can take to manage your own emotions.I like that Sarah read this one herself on audible as you can tell this book was written from experience and with heart. It’ll definitely be a book that I refer back to through the different stages of Parenthood as my little 3 year old grows.Well done Sarah, another fantastic book 😊

    Excellent read and very introspective!

Fab book as always by Sarah. I had the pleasure of attending her book launch evenings in March and received this book there plus a talk about the book by Sarah herself. This book is great at looking at yourself and your background /past/upbringing in order to work out why you may not be a calm parent, and then therefore to try to figure out how to actually be a calmer parent! It can be hard hitting to look at your own past, and childhood but I believe it’s the key to figuring out how to pass on the do’s and don’ts of your childhood into your own children’s upbringing, and Sarah explains this well.I love Sarah’s way of writing and have read almost all of her books and this is one of the best. It’s helping me be calmer, and helping me have a better relationship with my children.

Very useful, reassuring and realistic guide. Made me reflect on several aspects of parenting and how to actually strip back some of the noise of parenting advice which can add to the stress, and instead be more in tune with my own parenting instincts as well as having more realistic expectations of my children. Focused on the parent!

I’m still reading but really valuing the honest and validating content of this book. Focused on caring and supporting the parent it fills the gap of parenting literature that tells you to be calm and nurturing but doesn’t tell you how to deal with your own difficulties. This book offers insights and solutions to support you through those personal challenges.

    Such an important book!

I was so excited when Sarah announced that she was writing this book! This book is going to be my go to “companion” for a very long time! It gives you confidence that you can be a calm parent – regardless of what others think / say about you. It picks you up after you’ve had a bad day and it reassures you that it is okay to mess up – we are not robots and it’s all about what we do after we’ve messed up. I really enjoyed reading about self kindness and I was pleased to find that you aren’t required to do 20 minutes of meditation every day. This book is not about making you a perfect parent, it is about understanding your needs, realising your triggers and teaching you about how to reconnect with your little ones when you make a mistake. I found myself a lot in this book, I believe most of my problems come from my upbringing but I also found myself in the “adult relationships” part. It’s just great. I don’t think you can read it once, I think it’s a book that you’ll want to go back to again and again , for the reassurance, advice, but also the motivation – when there’s nobody else to tell you you’re doing great and just forgive yourself for that awful day you’ve had – this book will.I’ve read a lot of Sarah’s books and she talks a bit more about herself in this one, which is also something I really enjoyed. It’s great to know a bit more about an author I admire so much.Don’t hesitate and get yourself this book. And tell your friends about it!

The book I’ve been waiting 6 years for 🙂

I’ve been looking forward to the release of this book, and now it’s finally here, it doesn’t disappoint. Whilst it’s not a parenting advice book, it is full of reassuring and helpful words to guide you through the journey to becoming a calmer parent. The first chapter, understanding your own triggers, was such a revelation for me. Then I moved onto embracing failures, letting go of guilt and the curse of comparison – I’m feeling so much more at peace both in my parenting and I’m my own life. There are practical chapters, including tips on how to stay calm in the moment. And perhaps most importantly, how to repair after losing our temper. It’s so freeing knowing we can (and will) make mistakes, and how to resolve them with our children.Sarah’s writing style is practical, easy to follow and reassuring. The book is partly autobiographical, so there’s a deep connection with the reader and material.I cannot recommend this book enough. I’m not a calm person by nature, and one if the biggest revelations for me is that nor is Sarah! If she can overcome her own nature to parent more calmly, then there’s hope for the rest of us.

A refreshing, must-have book for any parent or care-giver.

Honest and kind. An excellent book written by a real person about being a flawed, human parent wrapping yourself up in kindness, respecting yourself and in doing so having your crap together enough that your kids do, too.Sarah understands people. She understands how people impact on people. And how, therefore, parents impact their children’s formative years positively and negatively. She writes from a perspective of a person who has been there. Recognising that we are all flawed, our parents are flawed and their parents before them. Not aiming to hurl blame at past generations but to recognise our own experiences, what they were and how they might inform our own parenting style – and more importantly how we might improve and move forward, heal, and therefore be the generation to act as a circuit breaker.I’ve already used several of Sarah’s books and firmly believe my son, who was born in to a whirlwind of trauma (born prematurely during lockdown one, to name the first of several traumas) is an astonishing example of how gentle parenting lays the groundwork for empathic, intuitive and well-rounded children and I’m so pleased now to have this book to continue my own journey and enrich his life further by my own personal development.

    Insightful as ever

I’ve read most of SOS’ books and am a big believer in gentle parenting. However, no one claims it’s an easy style of parenting! High-stress careers, tiredness, family tensions… all sorts of things contribute to my not being calm or my best self some (a lot? 🙈) of the time. This book, above all, is kind. We’re all trying our best. SOS offers useful advice, always backed up by wider sources, scientific thinking etc. She offers genuine help and tips to make all of us a bit more accepting of ourselves, able to identify our own triggers, tools to change course etc. There’s no way you can read this book and not gain something from it and you’ll probably gain much more! For example, one thing that I learned from an earlier book was the importance of apologising to my children. It is an idea reinforced in this book. It sounds obvious when you say it, but why am I so much more accepting of their mistakes than my own? Thought-provoking and insightful.

    The parenting book I needed

This is the book I have needed for so long. Thank you, Sarah, for writing it. I’ve read many of Sarah’s books, and loved them all, but this was the one I have needed to read. My wish to be a gentle parent always seemed to be ‘failing’ because I would end up loosing my cool and would then feel endless guilt and like a failure of a mum. How To Be A Calm Parent has helped me accept that no parent is perfect, to lower my expectations, but has also helped me reduce the amount of times I do end up loosing my cool. An all-round perfect mix of lessons I needed. Thank you once again Sarah for helping me to be the mum my daughter deserves! For both her sake and my own.

Another very useful book from Sarah Ockwell-Smith

I come from a culture where being calm and respectful with children is not the default. I refer to Ockwell-Smith’s books regularly to keep myself in check and ensure I’m giving my children the childhood they deserve. The book has a lovely chapter titled ‘Shadows from the nursery’. I have already spent many years (and thousands of pounds!) examining the legacy of my childhood and I do believe it’s a vital starting place for any parenting book.

A well written and easy to read guide on how to be a calmer parent.

This book is easy to get stuck into and has many prompts and exercises for working out how to be a calmer parent. I was so surprised (after waiting a long-time to have a child) to find that I struggled with feeling calm so often in these early years. The book explains very clearly, without blaming, why parenting can be like this and it has really encouraged me to tackle my own issues. It feels like having a companion along the journey to making change and I”m very grateful that Sarah has written it. In my opinion, Sarah’s views on parenting, and the books in which she sets her theories out (this one included) are the way forward in creating the healthy adults we need to populate our world.

    Excellent book

I bought this book for my daughter in South Africa, so decided to read it myself seeing as I’m only going on holiday in April. All I can say is this author never disappoints, she provides advice and strategies for whatever area of child rearing you are struggling with in a way that relatable and easily understood. As with all of Sarah’s books, I really wish I had access to this sort of book and information in the 80’s when I was a struggling single parent of 2 very lively children who were (are) very close in age and knew just how to get under my skin. Perhaps if I’d been a calmer parent then my daughter would not be struggling today. Thank you Sarah, you are amazing.

    Excellent

I have read several books by the same author and this is probably one of the best. I recognise myself in many of the chapters and even though it brought me to tears, it also makes me want to change my ways once and for all. The only thing I would add is that looking back at my childhood and teenage years, I think it is some of my teachers with their way of humiliating children in front of the class and favouring others that made a more negative impact on me rather than my yes flawed, but loving and well meaning parents. Overall. I think it is Sarah’s willingness to be so candid about her own struggles that I have appreciated the most. Thank you!

Every caregiver needs to read this

When this book was first promoted I told myself I didn’t need it, I’m a fairly calm parent, I’ve followed Sarah and read almost all of her books and so what else was there to learn? But this book is a huge eye opener, I’m only a few chapters in and already I’m challenging my mindset, my triggers, and making improvements, I’m seeing the why in my “parent tantrums” and being kinder to myself. The book also has lots of helpful exercises to put all of the information into practice. And as with all of Sarah’s books, it flows so well and is really easy to read, it’s like talking to an old friend!Thank you for another amazing book!

I was encouraged to look into this author by my wife. I’m glad I did because this book was nothing like I thought it would be. Most books on parenting I’ve read just tell you to basically be perfect. This one is honest and has some useful insight. I’d definitely reccomend it.

    Reassuringly honest!

I am only a few chapters in but I am already loving the latest book by S.O.S. It is not what I was expecting. So often I think we expect these types of books to be preachy from someone who is a perfect parent but Sarah admits to have been far from that. She is honest, down to earth and totally relatable. It’s that much needed and missed chat with my best friend over a cuppa about how I feel that I am far from a perfect parent. Thank you for reminding me that no one is perfect and for giving me the skills to continue to work on myself.

I’ve been a huge fan of Sarah’s books when my children were younger but lately have realised that my own ‘stuff’ was getting in the way of being the parent I wanted to be and enjoying so much of the lovely life I’d created for my own children. In perfect timing Sarah has addressed the real topics that help parents to support themselves and their families. A easy to read book with lots of practical advice from a compassionate author. I strongly recommend to anyone with kids, who works with kids or thinking about having kids. Thanks again Sarah!

Another gift to parents from Sarah Ockwell-Smith

I’m still reading this book as I challenged myself to take my time and not do my conventional binge in a day read. I’ve read all of Sarah Ockwell-Smith’s books apart from one. And this is up there with the Gentle Sleep Book. It is kind, relatable and pragmatic. In a world inundating parents with more “stuff” to do and the image of perfection we are all peddled towards, every second of every day from pre-pregnancy to evermore (and ultimately fall short of), this book is honest and real. Thank you for another treasure of a book.

    Fantastic

This is a reasuring guide to help parents assess their lives and make changes to be calmer and ultimately better parents. It is not at all judgemental but is written in a way that acknowledges the difficulties inherent with parenting, the impact of our childhoods and current situations and offers activities and strategies to try to really think about how to make changes. A fabulous book offering reassurance and practical suggestions that feels like you’re getting advice from a friend. One to read and reread.

I have read several of Sarah Ockwell-Smith’s books. All have been super helpful. However, now it was time to work on me to bring about more effective change in my parenting. This is the first book I’ve read (except for story books with my children) for years! I’m so glad I bought it. The first episode was really a revelation and I felt like I was in a therapy session that I should have had years before! I had high expectations of the book but honestly didn’t expect it to “speak” to me as much as it has.I haven’t finished it yet but finally feel like someone understands me and I’m not broken.

An easy to read and digest book by an extremely clever lady!

I am only part way through this book, already so much if it resonates with me. Practical insights about how childhood and our upbringing affects how we are as adults… it’s not about blaming our caregivers, but about understanding our triggers so we can be calmer. Looking forward to finishing and would highly recommend to anyone who struggles to stay calm! Parent or not. Perhaps this could also save lots of upset and anger in adult relationships too!!

    Practical and helpful

This book just makes so much sense. It’s written in plain English and the author goes into just the right amount of detail. So many of these books can be patronising or feel like they set yet another standard for parents to (fail to) live up to, but this keeps it simple with a really nice tone, that just seems to take the pressure off. It came at just the right time for me. Thank you.

The most helpful book I’ve read for a very long time

I’m only on chapter 3 of this book and I can already see how helpful this will be for me and for my kids. I already have a few of Sarah’s books and I love her writing, so informative but so relatable at the same time. This book is particularly honest, thank you Sarah on behalf of my family and the countless other families this book will help.

    Important book for all parents

This is definitely my favourite of all of SO-S’s books. I think the majority of us have a decent idea of how we would like to parent, but actually putting it into practice is tough. I’ve found this book so helpful for making me feel like less of a monster when I do lose my cool, and a great resource to help me in the future. 100% recommend.

    I feel so seen

Sarah says somewhere that she wanted this to be like a hug in a book and I genuinely did experience it this way. I appreciated her honesty about her own journey and flaws and felt her understanding and empathy through the pages. I know I will revisit this book as part of my own healing process and recommend it to anyone needing to feel affirmed, empowered and enough.
