    A must for every household

I recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with a thought, an emotion or a habit that is holding them back. Dr Julie Smith breaks life’s challenges down into simple ideas and gives you the tools to help you to overcome them. I know this is a book I will return to again and again. The feelings wheel alone was worth the cost to understand and process my own emotions. Highly recommended!

    Fantastic… when you’re in a good place

I found this a fantastic read. A bit harder to apply when I was struggling mentally, but so many things from the book I was able to use to prevent me spiralling, such as “feelings are not facts”. Again, a fantastic book. I would happily read more by this author. I will be getting this book for a couple of family and friends whom I think would appreciate exploring their own mental health. Highly recommended.

Just as the title suggests, I can’t believe I hadn’t read this before!

Super book, really useful when recovering from trauma which caused decreased self-esteem and anxiety. I’ve recommended this book to numerous people since. It’s very worth reading, whether you need it for mental health, to support someone else or just to be aware of how you can cope with different situations.

    To the point

Full disclosure: I haven’t read or listened to the whole book yet. Bought, or as Amazon calls it now, acquired on Audible first and after an hour of listening sort of in the background while I was working realised this is important, and bought, sorry, acquired, the book on Kindle. Also had no idea that author is a clock app rock star because I tried that particular app for 2 days and decided that was not how I wanted to spend the rest of my life, because it was literally all I did for hours on end. Watch one 60 second video after another …Anyway … judgment of apps aside. The reason I am 100% willing to give this book 5 stars straight out of the gate is that I immensely appreciate the lack of waffle and stories.Almost every, no, actually every, help yourself become better book that I own is 80-90% case study, stores and examples. It irritates me. I do not care if some person has done it before. I am not that person. Thanks for the citations but I don’t really care who tested what I care of it works for ME.This book is straight to the point. Opens with a bit of chit chat but the important part is: here is a thing that I believe will help you and here is how to do it. Amazing. The way I passionately wish every self improvement book was so I don’t have to skim through endless pages looking for the relevant and useful part.Perhaps I am too harsh in my judgement of aforementioned app because if it is the reason Dr Julie was able to condense so much immediately applicable immediately helpful advice into a book without insisting on 90% filler then perhaps all authors in the genre should spend time on producing content for it.Do I think this book will change my life? Yes, in small almost imperceptible ways I do believe that one day I will notice a difference in how I respond to the millions of small irritations or wounds we all experience every day that add up to a big bruise if we don’t manage them. IF, and only if, I read, digest and apply what I learn in this book every day to weather the emotional storm.

A ‘MARVELLOUS’ Little life tool book, for everyday ups and downs

I love this book so much! It really is a great little tool to have to hand. Life has it’s ups and downs for everyone and there are some really great tips to help break them low mood circles. No stigma, just a reassuring read that makes you feel normal. Once you have read the whole book, there are different chapters for different ups and downs. It’s a great book to have to hand. These chapters makes it helpful so you can just go to that chapter and have a read to reassure yourself and a reminder of how to break that circles. Would highly recommend this book to everyone. I also follow Dr Julie Smith on Instagram, her videos are amazing at simplifying situations. A total breathe of fresh air. 5🌟’s from me. What a wonderful woman sharing her life skills with us all, so everyone can benefit. What a beautiful soul she is 💖

    Absolutely amazing and insightful!

I’m still reading this, and it is 100% worthy of it’s bestseller status. I’ve been trying to get therapy sessions arranged for myself, but, being in the UK, it’s taking forever due to insanely long waiting lists. I bought this book hoping to be able practice self-help, and this hasn’t failed to disappoint. In terms of physical quality, it’s pretty good. I have the hardback and it feels good to hold. There’s a few odd marks on just a few pages, but nothing that’s massively bothersome. I care more about what I’m reading than what I’m holding.I can see myself coming back to this book for years and years to come. Thank you, Dr Julie Smith!

    felt gimmicky

I want to firstly acknowledge that I have read a large number of books in the genre, which no doubt has influenced my experience of listening to this book. My first observation is that you can tell how this book would do well in an insta environment. It has the feel of a snap shot of information. At first I thought it was a helpful way to share information. Then I was left feeling it was incredibly oversimplified – not a bad thing you might think – well that is unless you have 36 chapters to get through of the surface level insight. It became laborious, monotonous and underwhelming. I did really want to get something out of the book, but sadly I was really left feeling it was a chore, and I had succumb to some superb marketing.

    WORTHLESS

I GAVE THIS BOOK TWO STARS JUST BECAUSE THE AUTHOR TOOK THE TIME TO WRITE IT.I FOUND IT COMPLETELY LACKING INSIGHT AND ANY ADDED VALUE TO MY LIFE. IT’S EVERYTHING EVERYONE WITH DEPRESSION OR ANXIETY ALREADY KNOWS. BUT HAVING SAID THAT, I ONLY MANAGED TO GET THROUGH HALF OF IT BEFORE I PUT IT DOWN FOR GOOD. IT WAS USELESS TO ME.

A Refreshingly Insightful Exploration of Life’s Lessons

“Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before?” is a veritable treasure trove of insights, encompassing a broad spectrum of topics. The author’s knack for explaining complex theories with a simplicity that is both rare and remarkable. What truly stands out in this work is the author’s dedication to grounding her theories in solid scientific research. This is not simply a collection of musings or personal anecdotes, but a well-structured exploration that draws from a vast array of scientific studies. Each idea is backed up with compelling evidence, making the content digestible and credible. This book goes a step further by including detailed graphics that encapsulate the essence of its theories. These graphics are worth more than a mere glance; they convey a depth of understanding that could easily replace thousands of words. However, while this book does a commendable job of presenting fresh insights, it has shortcomings. Some portions felt like a repetition of concepts well-trodden in the self-help genre. For those seasoned in this realm, there might be instances of déjà vu, which can slightly dampen the overall reading experience.

I loved reading this. I bought it after seeing the author on social media – it’s easy to read, you can read in small sections if you need to, I find that I can then reflect in bite size pieces. It’s written with a great perspective.

  23. Robert ‘Bob’ Macespera

    4.0 out of 5 stars

    Very good

The first thing we read about the author in this book (in the dust jacket literally after the book’s title), is that Dr Julie Smith is “a social media superstar … “. First things first; these are the signs of these times. Truth to be told, then the entry carries on introducing Dr Smith as a “trained psychologist” – there’s still hope.A large online presence has brought Dr Smith remarkable fame. In her social media “bites” (as she likes to call them), short pieces of advice to cope better with everyday life uploaded to online platforms, Julie always looks relaxed, happy, often enthusiastic. She likes retorting to basic examples, using often pieces of fruit and biscuits to explain her theories; cups of grains of rice become large populations. Sometimes she jumps up and down on a chair to explain why is OK to be happy, or turns the screen into black and white to denote pessimism. These snippets have given Dr Smith followers by the millions. Too much? No, because she’s good at what she does, which is explaining an intricate science (psychology) to the layperson. Even better, her advice is always practical, not abstract so the viewer will know how to put the advice to work. She reaches a large audience because she’s thorough in what she does, but also simple – in the best sense of the word, she knows what’s good for the spectator and how to reach him, she’s indeed, and thankfully, no “celebrity” blabbing platitudes. She’s an actual scientist, and it shows. At the beginning of her book (her first, surely not her last) Dr Smith explains that said book contains the further “details” of her mini-clips. She thought that there was something missing in those short clips, due to the format constraints, so here it is. Quite a fair point; this book is the elaboration beyond the “bites”: what she’s left behind for clarity and brevity. And, yet again, she’s nailed it, because the book is a worthy piece of counsel and which can be enjoyed with or without the mini videoclips.Dr Smith gathers the right skills necessary to succeed in “popular science”: she’s knowledgeable, passionate and writes well; and also, she expresses herself very clearly – there’s no jargon or unnecessary long words for show or to impress her audience. Furthermore, she’s very warm, so much that the pages read like long letters writen by our favorite cousin. And so, with these foundations, the book starts and goes well, and then never drags, never fails; it never loses the reader’s attention.Dr Smith goes for width rather than depth and this helps: the book feels well balanced. And at the same time, the author’s honesty and cautiousness are ever-present: she explains (repeatedly) that the text is no magic formula for happiness, only a set of tools that, consistently applied, will help the reader. There’re some examples along the pages, but Dr Smith never falls for the mistake (tediously common in popular science books) of retorting constantly to examples to fill whole chapters. She does not need that: she knows quite well her trade and is merely willing to share her knowledge and experiences with the reader. And yet again, in the clearest of ways, perhaps at some points treading dangerously (but never falling) for a too simplistic ground. Yet Dr Smith never crosses this line and she never addresses her readers from above, lecturing, much less patronizing her audience. There are many icons and arrows in the book, but the reader never feels treated lightly. On the contrary, the surface is plain, but the core of the book (the “tools”) is quite worthy. And what’s wrong with the book? Not much, nothing important. Perhaps the reader could do with less graphics, drawings and charts. These take a good percentage of the total space, a bit too much. For instance, a simple box with three blank columns “Values – goals – day-to-day”, a template for the reader to make his / her own charts, takes a whole page. Is that necessary? And related to the previous, this is one against the publisher. The book falls for a common failure: it has 352 pages in the first hardback edition and should have been 152. Not that the text should be shorter, but the spaces, the whole pages containing a title, the chapter divisions and the pages with one or two paragraphs in massive font are all unnecessary and mere distractions (and a sad waste of paper), and all just to make a longer book, perhaps thinking that this will make it more interesting or worthier. As if a volume would be better for merely being thicker. A big mistake, unfortunately quite common these days. But yet again, the book is very good and it could (and should) be only the first of a long and illustrious career. Dr Julie Smith has a lot to tell and she’s happy to share it; that’s very good news.

Good book. Many things in the book, I’ve learned from other books and friends who are Psychologists, so it’s a good one that explains things in detail, and that helps many who don’t have time to be reading along the lines. It’s a good book to tale with you, when your waiting for a family member taking the mick at sainsburys getting grocery, have a read and relax lol.Enjoy.

Good read, and insightful, if a little superficial

There is no doubt that this book covers off a LOT of topics and concerns for people who want to improve their lives, improve their careers, improve their self worth and confidence. I purchased it for my better half so that she could take a more positive outlook on life in general and see the world through my eyes of a glass half full approach. While I appreciate the many areas that are covered off in this book, one of the challenges is that a lot of the discussion points will be irrelevant to some readers and conversely, for those topics that are relevant, it felt like the book rushed through some areas and therefore it was very topline and didn’t necessarily give valid real life examples of where situations arise that cause negativity or a lack of self worth/confidence. As such, the content IS very good in this book, and it’s a worthwhile read (and nice that it’s in hardback) but I almost feel like you need a whole book on each sub-section, so that readers could purchase a book that specialises in each topic, rather than it being very vague on all topics, but then I guess this “generalistic” approach is part of the book’s appeal, as it is relevant to almost any person, even those who are positive for the most part, so I did enjoy reading it myself, I just wanted more from it, or perhaps I was just expecting more due to all the hype and 5* reviews!

Dr J in my pocket / A life changing and saving read.

This was the easiest 5 star review I could write! Over the last few years we have had our challenges but Dr Julie has been by the proverbial side through different forums and the book is the cherry on the top. While reading this book you can feel a sense of warmth around you making you feel that you are not alone or not to be ashamed of our vulnerabilities. It is out emotions that define us and we should embrace them. The book guides you in a concise and empathetic manner sitting proudly beside me wherever I am / should I need to refer to it. You can target each topic as and when you need.It is more than a book for me, it is a symbol of hope that we all have our place in the world and there are good people out there caring and supporting us raising mental health awareness. My only wish was that Dr Julie and the book were there when I was younger in my darkest times but I am glad she, and the book is by my side now when my thoughts started to wonder in a negative zone or feeling low. I would go as far to the book is inspiring and life-saving, I genuinely mean that.Even writing this I am tearful but have a sense of joy knowing that I am not alone and that mental health is no laughing matter or makes me a lesser person. I am grateful for everything Dr Julie does and will continue to spread her good work to friends and family.Dr Julie comes across as someone an absolute expert in her field with a genuine care, the world could really learn a lot from her. My final comment is “WHY HASN’T NOBODY TOLD ME THIS BEFORE!”

Best book I have ever bought

Where to start with this amazing read? The title is perfect, and from the first chapter I experienced lots of aha moments. With a struggling teen at home, this mixes:feel like this? ; then Do this – in plain English. We have been to therapy in the past, with no clear results, but this little gem, takes all of the mystery out of stress, anxiety, low mood, fear, self-doubt, grief, and why we adopt damaging behaviours, and most importantly what we can do to counteract it. I am very excited about the content of the toolkit contained within these pages. We should have this book on the high school curriculum. This author, Dr Julie Smith, has provided me with the last piece of the puzzle in my quest to helping my teen. He is even reading it after I sent him one of your short video clips, which are also brilliant. Dr’s take heed, this woman is going to save lives.

    Nothing new, basic CBT.

The book was clear and well written, however it is nothing new. I’m a Psychotherapist and I really wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone working in mental health-you would have heard it all before. I would maybe recommend to people who have never had therapy and literally know nothing about psychology.

There is someone who cares (honestly!)

Despite being a frequent Amazon customer over the years, I’m not one to leave reviews (no offence intended) However, I can’t pass up the opportunity to congratulate and thank Dr Julie for this amazing book.I live with chronic mental illness and discovering Dr Julie has been a godsend (particularly during the current world climate 🥺) Finding a professional who is obviously so passionate and determined to make a difference (without any ulterior motives) is a refreshing change, especially at a time it’s arguably needed more than ever (unfortunately 😢)Thank you Dr Julie for not only taking the time to put together a book that is genuine in its desire but also for your willingness to share your professional wisdom and knowledge in a unique, easily digestible way.I highly recommend this to all those mental health warriors left feeling dejected and cast adrift by the shortfalls in mental health care available on the NHS. There are still professionals who care and want to help, even when it seems you’ve been left to navigate through the darkness alone.I believe in you, and so does Dr Julie 💖💖💖

I would recommend this book to anyone who has ever had a mental health problem, which is basically all of us. We will have mental health issues at some stage of our life. This is really good at breaking down situations and providing helpful tools to help you overcome those situations, this does not replace therapy itself, but it’s very helpful to be used in conjunction with it

Absolute Bible for Everyday Emotional Survival

I discovered Dr Julie Smith on Social Media throughout *that pandemic* and was delighted to buy this book yesterday. The book is concise, informative and designed to be read and picked up when there are certain emotions we are finding difficult to tackle – how to recognise short term numbing processes and alleviate the negative thought/emotional biases we encounter when life deals us an unfair hand.As one who has suffered innumerable setbacks in life, with frequent “Why am I so different for feeling so strongly when others seem to ride through life and tell me I’m too over sensitive” thoughts and feelings, I’m going to learn to counter them with helpful tools Dr Julie has set out so that I can build more “resilience” in future. In my mid 40s I thought I would have it all figured out. It’s not the case at all and I’m reassured this book is going to help me identify where I could help myself better in future.

The forms and figures can’t be printed from this kindle edition which makes things difficult.

I think the ideas and suggestions are very interesting and would be useful, however, as there is no way to print the potentially useful and relevant figures and forms for reference, this makes the kindle edition difficult to follow.

    Worth reading

Very interesting, lots of practical tools, good clear style of writing, well set out and nice design. If you’re interested in self-help/mental health this book can sometimes feel a little repetitive, but it’s an excellent ‘compilation’ of good ideas. Dr Julie is a good balance of compassionate without being patronising.

    Very Good Indeed

Written in such a way that the key messages of each chapter go into the old brain! Full of common sense practical advice that can be immediately implemented. I highly recommend this book.

Charming but not as detailed as expected

I hadn’t been a social media follower of Dr Julie previously but had seen her talking on another podcast and liked the concept of this book. It is warmly written and her friendly personality comes through the writing. She also does open up about experiences and low points in her own life and confidence which is nice. The book is split into topic chapters so you can easily pick the book up and find tips on what you need (dealing with stress, dealing with grief etc) but I found the chapters quite short, and seemingly they are the basics with a reference that if you need more detail call a professional. I can understand that but it sort of left me often thinking that some bits were too glossed over or a bit basic.I have read quite a few self help books and heard very many similar podcasts, so I have given it four stars as I don’t want to be biased because of this, as someone with lesser exposure to life coaching and mental health awareness may find Julie’s writings a God send and just what they need.

    A brilliant self help book

Like a lot of people out there I suffer with anxiety and have had some very low moments over the past few years. Prior to lockdown, I came out of a very bad relationship, for the following two years in lockdown I spent all the time alone with my thoughts, going over and over in my head. I had been put on medication by my doctor but that made me feel worse so I stopped taking it. I felt like there was nothing I could do to fix myself, I didn’t want to talk to others as most people I talk to have their own problems. There is more to the story but let’s talk about the book that sent me in a better direction. Now I am not really into reading books, but I had been following Dr.Julie on Instagram and had found her advice very helpful. I decided to purchase this book, as I said I am not much of a reader but I found the book very easy to follow and understand. There were so many things in the book that I could relate to and it made me feel like I was not alone, that others out there have the same struggles that I have. There are some simple tasks in the book that are very helpful when in a low mood or a situation where I have struggled to cope with.I bought the book just after release, I have finished reading it but find myself going back to it when my day isn’t going so well. This book offers some great advice in a simple, easy-to-understand format.

    Handbook of life

I will always turn to this book for future guidance. The title says it all, Dr Julie managed to explain things in a way that made me understand my thoughts and from a person who like to understand the detail this was a sigh of relief. I am sick of being told how to manage without being told why it will help but this book I feel gives some explanation. It has took me back at times an made me think about the childhood I had and how that has impacted my adulthood, something I didn’t ever connect before reading this book. I had to have a couple days away from the book to process thoughts and feeling it brought up for me but I’m glad I have had to face the feelings and feel I am better equipped to deal with issues. It has helped me deal better with my daughter who is 9 and having slight anxiety being able to use the phrases Dr Julie has used to explain in real simple terms and a way in which I wouldn’t have been able to if I hadn’t read has been really useful to me an my daughter and me educating my daughter at a young age so she has the skills instilled in her as a child to adulthood rather than having to look blindly for them later on in life.

Its ok, may need a coach to fathom it out

I like Julies linkedin posts so thought id give the book a try as a reference. Nicely laid out, hopefully will get time to invest in its content.

Not very enlightening for those experienced in mental health

This book is well written and I did somewhat enjoy it, however as someone who has suffered with mental illness most of my life and now works in mental health I really didn’t see the point. It teaches a lot of what I already knew and at times it felt like it was just pointing out the obvious
